The First Steps For A Young Mom To Take Toward Getting An Education

In this economy, everyone knows that you need a good education to get ahead. But a traditional four-year university education is not right for everyone--especially for those that are living the rest of their lives actively.

Young married individuals, families with children, and single parents often cannot keep pace with the demands of singularly-minded college professors while also holding down a job and taking care of family.

So how do you, a young mom, endeavor to get an education while handling everything else life throws at you?

Well, there is no simple answer. For some, night school or independent study courses work the best, while others look to friends and neighbors to provide childcare while maneuvering through certificate programs. But allow me to provide a bit of advice to help you make the most of this challenging but rewarding experience.

First off: location, location, location. While any metropolitan area is likely to feature many community colleges and trade schools, the regions themselves are not all created equal. Consider where you have family members or friends that can provide support and even a temporary place to stay.

The state of Utah tends to fall into a stereotype of being overrun by Mormon families. While this is not entirely inaccurate, this may be used to your advantage. In a place where there are so many moms in your situation--wanting to care for children and provide for them in equal measures--there are bound to be plenty of educational opportunities.

For example, a Utah esthetics school is frequently superior to any similar one in another state. That is not to mention that there is a great selection across the state, so there is little worrying over commuting or having to live in an area that is less than appealing.

It may be hard to move from where you are, but if you find yourself in an area where you do not feel safe and/or you feel stunted--like you just can't get ahead, then it is time for you to pack your bags, muster your courage, and get out.

But be sure not to go barreling into a career that you will not want to stick with for the rest of your working life. Many young moms select a long-term career out of desperation. They want a job that is stable and secure and think little beyond that.

Don't allow yourself to get into that position. Talk to a career advisor and spend some time thinking about what you really enjoy. Passion won't guarantee you a large paycheck, but it will make the tough times more bearable
